DIY: Lighting Installation
How many blog posts does it take to change a lightbulb?
Hopefully just one!
In this blog post, we will be covering all the tips and steps it takes to safely change a light fixture.
Please note - installing your own light fixtures can save money and time, but enlisting the help of an electrician will deliver the best results. Not to mention that older or more complex light fixtures can be tricky to replace depending on their style. Our team is ready to help!
Here’s how it’s done:
Turn off power. The first step to anything related to lighting should be to turn off the power. Make sure to turn off all electricity powering the room by going to your circuit breaker. A simple flip of the switch isn’t a guarantee the light is completely off.
Remove light bulbs. Now that you have verified that it’s safe to begin replacing, remove any light bulbs screwed into the fixture.
Unscrew the fixture. Most, if not all, light fixtures are held in place by screws. Lay down a towel directly underneath the fixture to catch any drywall or dust, and begin to unscrew the fixture. You might need an extra set of hands to help you with this step!
Finish detaching. Remove any electrical tape or brackets, and safely detach wires.
Replace. Attach the wires of the new fixture to the ceiling by matching wires of the same color. Screw the fixture into place, and pop some light bulbs back in.
Restore light. Turn the power back on and eureka! You should see your new fixture light up.
